Stefan Müller (Parliamentary State Secretary, MP) and Michael Frieser (MP) offer SEMIKRON their congratulations

Nuremberg, 20 January 2016
Nuremberg-based power electronics manufacturer SEMIKRON has joined the cooperative project HoskA, which aims to develop an efficient and flexible converter platform for use in electric motor drives. To help fund this cutting edge research project, SEMIKRON has been granted 600,000 euros in funding from “IKT 2020 – Forschung für Innovationen”, a research initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).  On Tuesday, 19 January, Parliamentary State Secretary Stefan Müller (MP) and member of the German parliament Michael Frieser (MP) paid Semikron a visit at their headquarters in Nuremberg to congratulate the management personally on their involvement in the HoskA project. SEMIKRON CTO Harald Jäger took the visitors on a tour of the premises, showing them the development and production of power electronic components used in converters designed for applications in the field of renewables (wind and solar power), energy-efficient industrial drives (motors) and e-mobility (hybrid and electric vehicles).

Intelligent and sustainable mobility is one of the main focal points of the German government’s new high-tech strategy. An important and necessary part of this is research on innovative electronic systems for e-mobility applications. Specifically, it has become necessary for the highly complex power electronic systems and components used in the field of e-mobility to be redeveloped for use in vehicles of different voltage classes. A scalable modular system that offers greater flexibility for use in a wide range of applications could be instrumental in achieving cost-efficient, voltage class based e-mobility.

Background:

The HoskA project (highly efficient scalable power electronic modules for EV motors) focuses on the development of new components for scalable converter modules for use in EV motors. The aim of the project is to develop power electronics that deliver far higher efficiency and power levels than existing technology. The 5.61 million euro project went live on 1 January 2016 and involves 5 partners from industry and research, whose close cooperation will be of the essence in achieving this goal.

About SEMIKRON

SEMIKRON is one of the world's leading manufacturers of power modules and systems primarily in the medium output range (approx. 2 kW up to 10 MW). Our products are at the heart of modern energy efficient motor drives and industrial automation systems. Further application areas include power supplies, renewable energies (wind and solar power) and utility vehicles. SEMIKRON's innovative power electronic products enable our customers to develop smaller, more energy efficient power electronic systems. These systems in turn reduce the global energy demand.

SEMIKRON is a family owned business founded in 1951, headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany. Today the company has a staff of more than 2,900 people in 25 subsidiaries world-wide. This international network with production sites in Germany, Brazil, China, France, India, Italy, Korea, Slovakia and the US ensures fast and comprehensive service for customers. By establishing the online shop in 2009, SEMIKRON increased its presence for customers. The SEMIKRON Online Shop offers 24-hour availability and world-wide access with multi-language sales and technical support.
